The Jacksonville Zoo

It currently sits on 89 acres directly on the Trout River off Heckscher Drive in North Jacksonville. It’s a stunning natural preserve that has many varied exhibits that show the animals in as close to their natural habitat as they can get.

The zoo houses over 2,400 species of animals including Jaguars, Elephants, Lions, Tigers, Great Apes. There are also 1,500 unique plant species on display as well. Including over 90 different variations of Bamboo. The zoo remains prominent in animal conservation efforts, including breeding programs to ensure the survival of endangered and threatened species.

The city contracts with the Jacksonville Zoological Society for the running of the zoo. The city of Jacksonville also subsidizes the zoo with public funds. It is possible to purchase an annual pass as a “friend of the zoo”.

Jacksonville Zoo- Range of the Jaguars

The new Range of the Jaguar exhibit has won national awards for zoological exhibits. It’s the largest Jaguar exhibit in North America. And the Jaguars can be seen playing in the water to catch fish, which is really a great experience. This exhibit was funded by the current owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mr. Shahid Khan.

The newest exhibit was the Land of the Tiger completed in 2014. It’s a quite stunning exhibit that gives the zoo guess multiple vantage points to examine the Tigers. It has been well-received in the community.
